I remember lovely Sunday lunches when I lived in Dublin and we used to drive out to the Glenview for a family treat. We really felt we were in the countryside; such is the spectacular scenery here, known as the Glen of the Downs. With recent road improvements, it is even more accessible and remains a firm favourite with families from Dublin. I was delighted to revisit the Glenview Hotel recently, and discover that it really does offer a taste of the country while only being less than an hour’s drive from the city. From the moment we arrived, we felt like we had stepped-off life’s busy treadmill and taken a breather from the rat race!

The health and leisure centre is really first class, and they have a couple of treatment rooms where I had a wonderfully relaxing hot-stone massage. It was as excellent as any I have had in a state of the art spa facility. Our room was big and bright, and beds and bed linen were first-class. Like many hotels now, there was wireless broadband on the ground floor, and for those who did not or could not avail of that, there is an excellent business centre with Internet access free for residents. The hotel appears to attract the corporate clients as well as families, and has state-of-art facilities for business, secretarial services, ISDN lines, video conferencing etc.

We had a very pleasant dinner in the Woodlands Restaurant, which was accompanied by very good wines from an extensive wine list. The location of this dining room offers spectacular views over the Glen of the Downs. Breakfast is also served here, and it was a pure joy to have a leisurely breakfast the next morning while looking down at the stream of cars heading into the city. It felt like we were having a day off school! To add to the feeling of freedom in the countryside, we went for a walk around the gardens that are beautifully maintained with colour all the year round. There are thirty acres of gardens and woodland to explore, and then there is the golf. There are golfing packages available at the hotel and preferential green fees from most of Wicklow’s top golf courses. These include Powerscourt Golf Club, Roundwood, Greystones and Charlesland Golf Clubs. Next trip we will bring the clubs and avail of some of these lovely picturesque courses. Another tip for next visit, book the penthouse and enjoy the best views in the whole of County Wicklow!

What’s to do in the area?

There are many attractions in the area of North County Wicklow, and some of these are Avoca (where Balykissangel is filmed), Mount Usher Gardens, Powerscourt Estate, Russborough House, Avondale House and
The National Garden Exhibition Centre. A visit to Avoca Handweavers is highly recommended, it is just nearby, and as well as some wonderful gift shopping, you can enjoy one of the best lunches in Wicklow.
